I've been researching as much as I can on buying a new computer for college. I have a Dell that's a few years old, and I'd just like to have a newer one. I'll make out a list of my pros and cons of each....maybe you guys can help me decide. :)
Desktop
Pros
Cheaper
Harder to steal
Cons
Eats up space
Can only use in dorm
Laptop
Pros
Mobility
Saves space
Cons
Easy to steal
Can be pricey
Lap top is more appropriate. You can take it with you to the library, outside, etc.
I have both and a PDA. I can access LawnCafe anytime, anywhere. :)

Laptop
If you want one I could sell you one, wireless network and everything.
I took my lap top on a cruise was happy to get on Lawn Cafe from a wireless network. College libraries have wireless networks and most newer lap tops have the card built in. I have A,B, and C. The cell phone network card allows you to have access anywhere a cell phone does.

I would go with a laptop. See if you can get some type of theft insurance to help protect you from theft. Man Arkansas must be a rough place LOL just busting your chops. All college have low life's. Pick your friends wisely when you get there.... :l)

I would go with laptop. It's so easy to cart your whole life around that way.
You can always buy one of those anti-theft cables that you could anchor to your desk in the dorm, just have to watch out when taking it with you out and about.
My wife had a cousin going to law school @ San Francisco State. She did have a laptop that was stolen from her, but was able to recover it due to anti-theft tracking software. Sort of like a Low-Jack, first time somebody goes on the Internet, able to trace the IP address. If they always use the same access point, can get the laptop back that way. And no cannot be wiped out buy a normal formatting of hard drive. Think she paid around 30 for software program and 19.95 for year subscription.
The other thing, you just need to get something that is mid-grade(lap tops that came out around Nov Dec time frame.

I voted for the laptop too. The portability is a BIG plus.
I've had good luck with both Dell and Toshiba.

Looks to be unanimous so far, and I've been leaning towards laptop. I for sure won't be buyin the best, I usually shoot for mid-range. I built a decent one at the Dell site....around $1500. Not bad

I just got a Toshiba laptop from Circuit City for $700. I sure like it. I can now have the desktop and laptop on the same table in the office. I use the desktop for surfing the net. The laptop is for all the biz stuff.

I really like my laptop. It has come in handy many times...mostly taking it with me from school to home to do billing and record keeping.
But do you want to know the truth? I wish i didnt even have a computer. If i need a laptop, i can go to our library and check out one of about 40 for up to 6 hours. Then, to top it off, i can write papers at any one of our nearly 2 dozen computer labs. There are at least 3 of them that are 24/7. Do i need a computer, no... but it is nice i supose, i really only use it for music and the occasional paper (read: hardly ever)
Same goes for our T1 connection. I wish i had dial up, cus then id only get online once a day for a short period of time before i got annoyed at the slowness as opposed to me getting interupted often with AIM and all the distractions of the net always on.
