Around here they have a free service that does all of your locates, it is required. All you need to do is call 2 days before you dig and they will be there.

Ditch witch makes several models, very good equipment
Metrotec does also

I have a Rycom 8875 / 8859, active and passive (both reciever and transmitter) it works great. Found it new on ebay.

And you still have to call miss utility to get a ticket, I have a preprinted "call b4 u dig' form which I fill out on the call to miss u; then file in the "job folder' I make up for every job.

Surprise that Canada doesn't have a underground service alert. USA is sponsored by all the utilities to mark where gas, electric ect... is around. And to top it off, it's free. Cable for TV, well thats hit and miss as in my area they all did a very sad job and half hazard.

As far as get locating equipment on the cheap, I'm another one for the Ebay route.
