View Full Version : NH L250 skid steer question (etc.)

I'm new here, so be gentile. Several months ago I bought a New Holland L250 skid steer. (It's the little baby size one.) The clock showed under 600 hours but that's because the clock was broken. So far I've replaced one rear wheel seal (the P.O. said it had a little leak. If so, I'd hate to see what he thinks is a big leak. The Johnstown flood maybe?), two hydraulic hoses that chaffed on each other till they wore through, put in a new hour meter and added lights.
Monday the drive belt from the motor to the drive pumps broke in a place where I couldn't work on it so I towed it, very slowly, about 60 yards to a firm, level spot. I don't know if I did damage by towing it or not. Won't know till I get the new belt on. Anyway, I figured out that the cause of the broken belt was one of the pump pullys wobbling on the shaft. The key was pretty much gone and the hole was worn to an oval. Ordered the new pully and am waiting.
The question (finally). The pullys are tandem ones presumably designed to run two belts but the service manual and the parts book show only a single belt. Seems to me if one is good, two has to be better. Is there any reason not to run two belts?
Thanks,
John

Thanks,
JohnNope, as long as the both belts will go around all the same stuff.

Well, I got the belt question answered. The correct belt is actually a tandem belt, a single belt with a double "V" design. It is a real PITA to put the belt on. Way too much stuff needs to be removed in order to do this seemingly simple job. But, it's done and we are back up and running. Till the next thing breaks.
I'm convinced I did get taken on this deal. Not much I can do about it now, though, since I bought it from a private individual. I guess I'll just keep throwing money at it as needed and someday it will be good as new. Hah! At least the motor (an Onan flat twin) seems sound. It runs well with no noticeable oil consumption. And when it works it is a nice machine for my relatively light needs.

Was the machine used on a farm/dairy or by a sod installer? My dealer showed me a LS180 that kept going through inner axle seals. Turns out bailing string, wire or even the mesh used for growing sod gets wrapped aropund the axles and destroys the seals. How do you prevent it? Don't know--just keep an eye on it.

buying used heavy equipment is not a bad thing just remember your going to replace stuff belts ,hoses, tires, seals, bushings, bearings, battery, alternator, seats. i bought many things from mowers to 35,000 gvw dump trucks from 200 hours to 300,000 miles. they all had something replaced on them before i had them for 1 year. the only used machine that needed little work was my johndeere 420. nothing has been replaced but tires.the only reason why i replaced them was for tires with a better lbs rating.i have a KW front end loader and backhoe on it.the stock turf tires couldn't hold the extra 800 lbs..
just like when i bought my dump truck for 10,000 if it was new i would be looking at an 80,000 price.so for that 10 grand i added 8,000 in repairs tires, wheel seals, clutch, brakes, battery box, batteries, new seats and some paint, truck runs great it has 360,000 on it and im pretty sure i can get another 100,000 out of her before the engine needs to be redone
