I am running windows xp with Internet explorer 6.0 This is the 2nd computer that I have had this problem with. In the box where you type in the www address you want to visit, when I click on the arrow button to bring up my list of websites visited, it just freezes up for about 60 seconds and gives me an hourglass shape. Finally after the 60 seconds is up the dropdown box will appear and I am good to go. UNTIL, I close out all my windows and then open a new one up. Then it is back to the ole 60 second wait. I have used system restore, as well as deleting all temp internet files and cookies running disk sefrag, etc. nothing helps. I went into the internet explorer advanced properties and clicked on restore default settings. Still no good? Any ideas?

How many other programs might you have running at the same time, also check any running in the background.
Is your system up to date, plus your IE program, was it loaded off a CD or downloaded, or did you transfer the program file in from another unit?
Besides checking these, ever thought about going with another browser? Likw Netscape.

I agree with the Goat........do a CTRL, ALT & DELETE and see what is running in the background. I'll bet there is something running at startup that is hanging you up. Post back the programs running in the background.

Some other issues,
Are you on cable or dsl?
Check your network settings
Are you running a software firewall?
Pop up stoppers, cause slow loading sometimes.
Most of all, are you sure your configuration is proper?
Do you use file sharing programs... This is the most common type of slow loading.
Just some thoughts....

I did control alt delete and the only program it listed was internet explorer. My computer is a dell less than a year old. the internet explorer software came installed on it. I am using dial up. I do not have to be online to have this problem. I can open a winddow offline and this problem will still occur. I closed all windows and tried it again. Again I got the delay before the list would drop down. I did control alt delete again while waiting and the only thing it said was internet explorer not responding

Sounds like you are missing a file....reinstall IE. I hope Dell gave you the cd to do this, I'm not sure how they handle that. If not, and it's less than a year old, maybe they can be of some assistance.

I guess a file could have been deleted. It worked fine the first 6 months or so. I am not able to find an internet exp;orer disk in my stuff from Dell. I for got to post another problem I have that may or may not be related. When I type ina web address and hit enter, it goes right to it if it is in my dropdown window or my favorites list. If it is not, such as I enter a website that i see on tv, I hit enter and it takes it forever to even attempt to pull up the new site. After I hit enter it just sits there and looks at me. I have the 2 little computers at the bottom of the screen symbolizing me and my isp. My computer never once blinks or attempts to send out any type of signal for about 30 to 45 seconds.

Sounds like you have it set to update everytime you start IE...let me look at the options and settings to see what can be done....that is why pages you have been to before load quickly and newer ones do not. And yes, they may be related. I'll be back (just fair warning :D )

Suggest you deal with one problem at a time, and it does sound related.
Call Dell, their support is pretty awesome, it just may take a while being that you use dial up.
It does sound like your best bet is to get a CD copy of IE, delete the current one, then do a clean install.

I will start by saying I am no expert with IE...:) So, it is up to you if you want to try these or not...the settings can always be switched back, just remember what they were before you start. If these do not work, I'd go back to my first suggestion to reinstall or contact Dell.
Try this first. Open IE, hit tools, then internet options. On the general tab hit settings, set it to either automatically or never. On the slider for temp. internet files, slide the tab about a quarter of the way to the right. They hit ok. Restart your computer.
If that didn't help, try this next...Open IE, hit tools, then internet options. Click the advanced tab. Under Browsing make sure the automatically check for IE updates is UNchecked (we had a problem with this before). Under Search from the address bar, check just display the results in the main window. Then hit ok.
If these do not help...please let us know what you found or had to do to fix it...good luck

None of the above fixes helped. Thanks for the advice though. I looked and I have no disc to reinstall IE 6.0 I will have to try and find one.

Found this site/page on internet while looking for some info myself. This particular page tells of problems with Messenger. Going to home page of this site offers many other solutions for Windows.
Check the site out, might find something useful.

You don't have to be fanatical about finding a CD for IE, it's just handy to have latest version around on CD for times like this, and you're sure to get complete version.
If finding a CD proves difficult, just download it, but go to Microsoft site so you don't get an altered version.

Check out the above page/site. It gives details about slow downs caused by MS Messenger, gives references back to knowledge base articles also.
While you're there, check out the rest of the site, a world of info for dealing with XP.
If you have difficulty finding a CD of IE, just go to Microsoft web site and download it. This is to make sure you don't get an altered or incomplete version elsewhere.
