Aint nothin like havin the right tools huh ?
I hate doing tree work around excavators. The operators are either not experienced enough, or they think that whatever they can reach is fair game whenever they want.

oh i wish i could own it.... that one... with 1500 hrs on it is going for 170,000$
i dont see that in my fleet in the future at all. lol... maybe a mini like lgf's but how often i get jobs to this scale.. i dont need one, it wouldnt be cost effective.... but it suuuuure is fun to play with... and it sure does move some dirt. i belive the rental company has it equipped with a 2.5 yard bucket...... dont quote me on that though.

Oh, the thing is a blast to operate... it makes picking up rocks look EASY! lol..... i hop out of the cab and try to move one by hand that looks small from the cab, but when you get up there is it quite large...... it is unbelievable how much power it has. This is just one of those rare jobs that i stumbled upon and couldnt refuse not to do because of the equipment i get to use. i doubt i will ever do a job like this again, but then im not really into excavation. Dont get me wrong.... i love useing (playing..lol) with the big equipment but its not something id want to do for a long time.... unlike landscaping. i eventually would get bored of being cooped up in the cab all the time running the thing.

i like being in the cab its dry, warm, dry and i get paid to play the best arcade game ever smash and grab
I don't like working around excavators because:
Was working at a site a couple weeks ago. Had just felled a couple of vine laden ash trees. Guy in the excavator starts to pull the trees out of the area when I am still there trying to cut them up a little bit. Not to good of a feeling to see a 16" diameter tree coming at you with another 16" diameter tree on the ground behind you, vines all over the place.
Then I was working this spring on another site, the guy working the excavator just grabbed whatever was around him and pushed it down. Didn't matter if the tree should have gone or not.
If the operator is willing to work with a team, then I have no problems with them. However, when they are off in their own world, or they are abusive with the machinery... I don't want to be around them.

When there is machinery that size working in the area, you should not even be workin around there. Doesnt sound like its the machinery operators fault, they can only see but so much when working.
It's nice to have the excavators, backhoes, loaders, etc. on site for certain things. However the operators have got to be on the same page as everybody else there. Like for loading logs, I like having a loader on site. However, the whole idea about pushing over trees with the machine, that scares me. Something like Peter's dozer is one thing... that doesn't need anybody else around in order to push over some BIG trees. However when you are working with a backhoe or an excavator and are trying to push over a 24" diameter oak... its a little unnerving.

$9,000 for a month and thats $108,000 for a year. Sounds a little expensive. For a landscaper your doing some different kind of work, must have set you back a bit huh? :!)
Lawngodfather
10-28-2004, 08:09 PM
That includes delivery and pick up too. $2250 a week for a $300,000 piece of equipment. Charge the customer for it.
I do that anytime I rent something.

Oh I always charge a customer for a rental. I don't work for free or spend money not to get it back even if it saves labor and time.

trust me.... they are getting billed......i had a minimum they were to pay x amount to cover the rental and some wages. what im doing is providing hours of service with it.. leveling a paddock area... bureing huge rocks... digging 3 foundations....not the typical landscaper thing..its a big excavation job i had a chance to tackle so i decided to go for it. its going back on sunday. the owner of the property im working on wanted alot more work done than orignally intended... but again im charging per hour....not the job. also i have a kubtoa running and a skidsteer. when they are all running at the same time...... the hourly rate isnt that bad. hehe

1)Always stay in view of the operator, and make sure he knows you're there. He's concentrating on the machine, he can't be looking for you.
2)Never put yourself in a pinch point.
3)When working around an excavator, you are there to help him, not vice versa. If you are not there to help him, get out of the way.
