I have an opportunity to get a 1999 NH LX865, but it has 3500hrs on it. Currnent owner says that there are no leaks and runs strong. Where do you draw the line on hours of use? I'll be using it for personal stuff around the property clearing some land. I don't have any knowledge of purchasing such equipment so I wanted to ask the experts! What should I be looking for? Thanks.

look for leaks dirty engine at least you can tell where the leaks are , if engine cleaned look real close for leaks. wear on pivot points grease fittings lots of grease no grease lots of wear.3500 hrs I would think for using for personal use not beating it up you should be ok. if that is true hr reading. a lot of different people who use the same machine takes it toll on machine, single owner user probably taken care of better.

I would probably want the dealer to check it out. Have them do a compression check on the motor.
High number of hours on a tractor is different than a mower. Tractors are built to handle hard work with a lot less stress on the machine. That is why after 50+ yrs you still see old fords still working the farms.
Like others suggested I would check all replaceable items and see what is going to be involved. Hoses and such, I would have the motor checked, and use this info to get a very good reseasonable price to offer.

Little steep on the price, actually I thought it said Lx665, that's what mine is.
I think $8k is right in line for that machine
If it was under 2,000 hours then $11-13k

Saw an article in a caterpiller dealer mag recently that showed a cat skid steer with fourteen thousand hours on it. Fabick in Fenton should have copys if any one is interested.

According to my NH dealer 600 hours per year is the industry standard. Typically, 5,000 hours on a diesel is about the time it needs to be rebuilt. I have a 2003 LS180 with enclosed cab and heater and they offered me $18,000 Yeah right I still owe $20,000 and it cost $32,000. They're trying to get me into a 2005 LS185.B
If you guys are looking for steel tracks, try Tracksplus.com I got mine through a dealer for about $1200.
