I am wanting to purchase a skid steer ( I love the Cat multi-terrain and ASV product lines) and tree shear to clear out fence lines on my land I recently purchased, then hopefully get into custom work. My question specifically is what size skid steer do I need (there are some very large trees and I don't want to tip over) and what is the best brand of tree shear or tree saw out there. I have heard that you should purchase larger than you expect to use, and that I would never regret it....what are your opinions?

I just ordered a Timberline Tree shear. It is the HTC model. I researched all available tree shears and decided on this one. It will go on my Bobcat 863. If you do a google search on skid steer tree shear, you will also see a report of a fatality that happened to a young man while using his tree shear. He was not in the right position, sheared a limb which tipped the Bobcat over and into the stump which crushed him while seated in the cab. He did not have full cab protection. Timberline does have a website and let me know if you need the phone number. Good luck - fredrocksr

Sir,
In response to your post about what size skid steer to purchase. In my opinion, bigger is better. I manufacture the Robo-Cut tree saw in central Kansas. I make two models, RC28 for 70 to 90 HP machines and the RC26 for 50 to 70 HP machines. You can check them out at www.circle3welding.com.
If I can help please give me a call. I would be glad to demo one of the saws for you.
Robert

I have used my Timberline an absolutely love it. It will cut a 24" base on a tree if you make two or three cuts. Also, it runs of the auxiliary hydraulics and has a diverter so you can actually rotate the shear from horizontal to any position thru vertical. That way you can reach up in trees to snip low limbs or cut down trees into firewood length pieces. It is absolutely the only tree shear made worth the money! It weighs 1250 pounds so you will need a good size skid steer to handle that much weight. I made a dolly out of square tubing and casters to allow movement when not in use. Good luck and remember, if it is priced cheap it probably is cheap. .......... fredrocksr
