Shindaiwa Corp. recalls backpack blowers

Backpack blowers

Shindaiwa Corp. is recalling about 23,000 backpack blowers. The blower's impeller (fan) can separate from the base and break apart, causing plastic pieces to be blown out of the machine, and pose a laceration and impact hazard to consumers. The flying pieces also can cause property damage and injury to bystanders.

This recall involves Shindaiwa Models EB8510 and EB8510RT. All models up to serial No. 7014728 are included. The backpack blowers weigh approximately 24 pounds and include serial numbers through February 2007 production (S/N 702XXXX) that are located on the side label. These machines are black and blue with a red and black label that reads, "EB8510, Shindaiwa."

Shindaiwa dealers sold the blowers from September 2005 through January 2007 for about $600.

Consumers should contact Shindaiwa for a dealer location to schedule a free inspection and impeller replacement. Consumers who have registered their equipment should have already received correspondence from Shindaiwa about this recall.

For additional information, contact Shindaiwa at 1-800-521-7733 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's Web site at www.shindaiwa.com.

This recall has been around a while acually. I work with the rework and we have been sending out reworked blowers for probably a good year now. Also that blower you have in the photo is an EB-630 which we are pushing because of the problems with the 8510. If you could change that photo to an 8510. There has been nothing but problems with the 8510 between head problems and problems with the impeller with gettin leaves sucked into it. They nw have a guard which will be placed over that to protect that from happeneing. We have had Shindaiwa out themselves to fix this and they couldnt. Our techs at my job are on a 97% of correctly fixing this problem to where shindaiwa was a 50% or so. The EB8520 will be less powerful as the 8510 being that is why all this is happeneing because it is way to powerful for a backpack. SO ill help you out admin on making this cleaer. YES HAVE YOUR SERIAL NUMBERS STILL CHECKED THERE ARE MORE MACHINES OUT THERE THAT NEED TO BE FIXED! Admin if you need more info PM me

I had to have two of these repaired not to long ago due to a problem with the muffler.

I just had the impeller replaced. Now it seems less powerful. Is that right or should it have the same power as it did before the update?

I also had my impeller replaced and i think it does seem a bit less powerful. It also seems a little louder as well. I haven't had any problems with my machine besides the recalls. i have a buddy with 2 eb8510s and they break all the time, he actually had one replaced because it locked up.

Is the new 8520 just an 8510 with all the recalls updated?

No its new motor and they are going back to the old proven technology. Not the new stuff which is what the 8510 was
